This LP contains many very valuable live performances. The great tenor Ben Webster is heard on seven selections with Duke Ellington's Orchestra from the 1941-43 period, jamming with pianist Teddy Wilson's pickup septet on "I Got Rhythm" in 1936 (a band also including violinist Stuff Smith and trumpeter Jonah Jones), guesting with the Woody Herman All-Stars in 1945, sitting in with Mezz Mezzrow on "Lady Be Good" and performing four numbers with a little-known version of John Kirby's Sextet (featuring either Charlie Shavers or Hot Lips Page on trumpet, clarinetist Buster Bailey and the underrated altoist George Johnson). The recording quality is generally decent and there are many inspired solos on this strong collection of previously unknown material.
