Hundred Waters' second album begins with a hymn consisting entirely of singer Nicole Miglis' harmonized vocals, singing for protection and love in an Appalachian tradition. That bold opening begins an album that seemingly overflows with emotion and adventurousness, barely letting up over the course of its nearly 50 minutes. Miglis' vocal loops in a questioning tone before breaking into beautiful choral vocals reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins, while the band puts on theatrical electronic fireworks. "Cavity" goes deeper and darker, as Miglis coos alongside trip-hop beats and Chinese-inspired electronic instrumentation. "Out Alee" shifts its beat just as it's getting comfortable in its New Age wilderness, keeping listeners entranced yet never bored. Hundred Waters occasionally borrow heavily from their influences—"[Animal]" is a dead-ringer for Bjork's "Pagan Poetry"—but their music never feels affected or insincere. It's the rare album that could just as easily sit soothingly in the background or hold your attention with a vice grip for its entirety. Allow it to sink its teeth in, and The Moon Rang Like a Bell becomes paralyzing in its otherworldly beauty.
